Revved up and Ready to Go - Indian Motorcycles and the Progression of an American icon
Shortly we will see the new 2015 lineup of Indian motorcycles. I can't wait to see what Scott Wine, CEO and Head of Industrial Design, Greg Brew, have in store for us. Scott boldly claimed that he had a passion bordering on obsession to return Indian Motorcycles to its rightful place as head of the class in US led manufacturing. I, for one, can't wait. Indian motorcycle enthusiasts are a different breed. For them, owning an Indian does border on obsession. It is a nod to the classic, the vintage, the days of old. It is an appreciation for something timeless and classic, beauty in simplicity.
Revenues have doubled since Wine's tenure as CEO from almost $2B to almost $4B in sales and are projected to be at $20 Bil by 2020. If you purchased $1,000 of stock at $20 per share in 2008, that same stock would be worth upwards of $133 per share today. Not too shabby Mr. Wine.
The thing I appreciate most about Polaris' purchase of Indian Motorcycles is that they didn't rush the go to market in search of fast revenue. Instead they built the foundation for future success. A year ago, there were no Indian motorcycle dealers wthin 300 miles of Indianapolis, my home. Today, there are six. They invested in building the dealer network, building the brand, perfecting the product and then, and only then, launching it for the world to see.
I say well done Polaris and Mr. Wine. I can't wait to see what's next!
